Home Business - Do You Answer Your Phone?

It's simply amazing to me that a person who is trying to grow a business does NOT answer their telephone.

I actually had a guy in a networking company recently, a guy STRUGGLING, I might add, who had sent me an email and ASKED me to call him about helping him build his business. When I called him, at the time we agreed upon, NO ANSWER.

I left him a voice mail reminding him of our appointment. He then right away sends me an email telling me he didn't recognize my number and he NEVER answers the phone if it's a number he doesn't recognize.

"How do you expect to grow a business when you ONLY answer the phone if it's a number you recognize?"

My immediate question for him, once we finally connected, was "How do you expect to grow a business when you ONLY answer the phone if it's a number you recognize?" "How many people who may have an interest in your business are going to have a phone number that you are going to recognize?"

Come on! Seriously.

If you EVER call my phone and get my voice mail it is because I am on the other line with someone (I refuse to interrupt a conversation to take another call), I'm enjoying a chat with my wife (seriously, I really enjoy the time we have to chat together), OR I am, in some other way, simply unavailable. I DO answer my phone and so should you if you want to build your business successfully. People want to know that you are accessible when they decide to do business with you.

Additionally, how many people whose websites you have visited actually CALL you to thank you for an order or just get to know you and share something helpful with you.

I HATE the anonymity of the internet.

So many people are hiding behind their dot coms without ever interacting with their audience of prospects or customers. In my opinion, FAR too many prefer impersonal email (YES, email is QUITE impersonal) over a friendly chat on the phone.

I guess THIS is my biggest question; "WHY?" Why are you afraid to answer your phone? Are you afraid someone is going to ask you a question to which you do not know the answer? So what? Is it SO bad if you have to say, "I'm not sure about that but I will find out for you and get right back to you"?

Learn to maximize your phone and you can see your business jump by leaps and bounds.
